In the tobacco industry, vaping is certainly the “new black” (or pink – if that’s your colour). In South Africa, the e-cigarette market is currently estimated to be around US$0.6billion. And over the next five years, this is said to grow with 4.28% year-on-year.

What does this mean for vaping enthusiasts like us? It means we are in for an exciting ride filled with choice, change and cloud chasing.

Here are some of the top 2024 trends we’ll see more over the course of the year:

1. Vape pairing

Vape pairing  is growing in popularity. Some flavours just pair better with certain meals, whereas others are a complete clash on the palate. It is an interesting personal experiment to find those that work together well but it could even become a fun date night or dinner party activity. The general rule of thumb is that less is more and that if the flavours go together in real life, they’ll probably match well for this purpose too.

 2. Personalisation through technology

Vapes and e-cigarettes have been around long enough for manufacturers to learn what works well, what annoys consumers or where there is opportunity for growth. The aim, of course, is to design and manufacture products that make it more convenient and enjoyable to vape. Technological advancements in the industry means we can look forward to a customisable experience where temperature settings and usage tracking could be done via a mobile app, and that's just the beginning.

3.  Flavours and beyond

It’s all about the flavour. Sweet. Sour. Umami. Bitter. Name it, and there will be a wide range of flavourful options. Love the taste of wine? There’s an e-liquid for that. In the mood for chocolate cake – done! We’ll see more interesting flavours arrive on the scene this year.

 4. Eco-friendly approach

Consumers care about the planet. To stay relevant, businesses across the world need to address this and rethink the way they make and package their products. Now that the vaping industry is evolving, customers will be looking to shop the brands that are prioritising recyclable devices, biodegradable materials, and sustainable production.

5.  Vape communities

It is in our human nature to yearn to share experiences with other people. Much like hobbyists group together with likeminded individuals to form social clubs and host events, vaping enthusiasts are expected to assemble to celebrate the culture together.
